She decided to build her business by doing two things every week:

1. She made calls every Wednesday morning from nine to eleven-thirty.
2. She attended one opportunity meeting with at least one guest every Thursday evening.

She did not experience immediate results, but because Jacqueline was persistent and consistent, after a couple months of this activity she brought two very strong members into her organization. Both immediately focused on building their organizations. In this same time period, Jacqueline also picked up two loyal customers. The return on both of these placements is potentially quite significant. The results did not develop overnight but they could pay Jacqueline back indefinitely.

Follow up is the key. As you fill your funnel, keep track of people who are not interested now but who might be more open-minded later when their circumstances change. Keep notes on these people so you can help them move forward when they are ready to take action. You will need some kind of system to remember all of the people you have spoken with and where you left off with each person. What material have you shared with this person? What were his concerns? When did you agree to contact him again? Whether it is an old metal box with file cards or a completely high-tech electronic contact manager, the only thing that matters is that you put your system to use consistently.

THE APPROACH

Learning how to effectively approach people to see if they might be interested in your business and products is among the most important skills you will acquire. In the early days of your business you will need to talk with many more people relative to the number who will actually want to buy your products or join your organization. This is an important time to keep your expectations in check. It is also the time that you are climbing up the learning curve, honing your expertise. Checking in with your sponsor, role-playing, and using all of the training tools that will be made available to you will make a world of difference. As you get some success under your belt, this aspect of network marketing can become a lot more fun and less daunting than in the beginning. I have found after considerable practice that I have been able to attract loyal customers and strong business partners with much greater ease with each passing year. Now, after many years in network marketing, it seems that I attract quality customers and new associates everywhere I go. This was definitely not my experience in the beginning.

If you or the person you are enrolling has concerns about approaching friends and family, take heed. The very nature of network marketing is word-of-mouth advertising. You should learn how to approach friends and family in an ethical and professional manner. Learning approaching methods that honor the relationships you have with people you know, love, with whom you work, and who you care about will be very good for business and ultimately good for the people who you approach. If you chose products that you believe can be of great benefit to those who use them, it should become apparent to you that it is your job to be the spokesperson for your company so that others can learn about them. Why would you want to deny the people you care most about the benefit of the products that you now distribute? Only fear and a lack of know-how could get in your way. Resolve both by learning the ropes. Your warm market-people you already know-are a gold mine for getting your business off the ground. And with the proper mind-set, you are offering your friends and family a gift by sharing with them the benefits of your products and, for some of them, your home-based business opportunity.

Here are some tips for successfully approaching someone about your business and products.

• Do not say anything about your products or about the opportunity until you know that the person you are speaking with has a need or want that you believe you can help him achieve.
• Think of yourself as a purveyor of information and a resource for solutions. Be a trustworthy advisor, always keeping the other person's best interest in mind.
• Be disarming by telling someone that you do not know if she will be interested. By letting her off the hook, she can relax more and hopefully listen better.
• Create conversations with people. Communicate, do not lecture. Ask questions to engage people in the discussion. One of the most common mistakes made by someone whose communication skills are lacking is to ask a question and then neglect to give the other person time to think of his answer. Conversely, a good communicator asks questions and waits while the other person takes the time to consider the question. "John, you are nodding your head in agreement. What does this information about living a longer, healthier life mean to you?" Pause. Give John a moment to reflect.
• Once the dialogue begins I let people know that as a result of their listening to the information I have to share with them one of several things could happen: they might become interested in my products and in becoming a customer; they might be interested to learn how to do what I do, which is recommend the products to others for profit; they might be interested in neither at this time; or perhaps they would consider referring someone they know to me. Any of those outcomes is fine with me; I will help them see if there is anything of benefit for them in what I offer.
• When speaking with prospective associates or customers, you might wonder whether you should lead with the business or lead with the products. Instead, listen to what they need and lead with your heart. Listening to someone's interests and concerns will guide you in knowing best how to serve her with your products and/or your business opportunity.

When approaching someone, here are two techniques to begin a conversation. I call this the "I Thought of You" method.

• I thought of you because... [Fill in something that this person wants or needs that you believe can be addressed by your products or business.]
a. I thought of you because you have recently talked about wanting to lose weight.
b. I thought of you because you have mentioned lately how tired you are at the end of the day.
c. I thought of you because you told me last week that you are unsure about the security of your job.
d. I thought of you because you told me you did not know how you would balance having a new baby with working.
e. I thought of you because as long as I have known you, you have been talking about wanting to be your own boss.
• I thought of you because... [Fill in something about this person that represents a skill or talent you see as a potential asset for your marketing organization.]
a. I thought of you because you are one of the most out-going people I know.
b. I thought of you because you seem driven like I am, and I like that about you.
c. I thought of you because I see what great leadership skills you have.
d. I thought of you because you are a walking billboard for healthy living and taking great care of yourself. (You can adjust this to reflect the products or services your business offers.)
e. I thought of you because you have excellent people skills.
f. I thought of you because you are one of the most goal-oriented people I know.
g. I thought of you because of your passion for serving others.

Speak the truth. Do not cheapen any of these conversation starters by being insincere. Even if you are using the most sophisticated on-line tools, ultimately people will join your organization because of you. The videos, websites, CD's, DVD's, and testimonials you share with your prospects are the tools. Building relationships based on authenticity, service, and trust is the craft.

THE INVITATION

Once you have begun the conversation with a prospective associate or customer, you will want her to do something to learn more. That could be any of the following:

• Sample some products.
• Watch a DVD.
• Visit a website.
• Read a newspaper.
• Attend an event.
• Attend a webinar.
• Meet with you
• Listen to a full presentation.

You will find that people will not always follow through on their promises to try products, review materials, or even show up for events. Succeeding in this business requires a lot of patience. I don't stress when someone reschedules an appointment or does not do what she said she would do; nor should you. But once someone is engaged, I monitor her diligently, for it is my responsibility to help her move forward. My job is to help someone do something that is in her best interest. If things do not go as I had hoped, I must remind myself that some of the greatest connections I will ever make-in life and in business-may be the result of a slow start. You can begin with the end in mind, which is to help people see the personal and specific benefits of using your products and joining your organization. But do not let yourself be blinded by that vision. Create interest and reduce resistance. Taking things step by step increases the chances that you will stay connected to and be in harmony with people.

While your prospective associate or customer has materials to review, it is good to touch base, ask him if he has any questions, and say something genuinely encouraging that is personal to him. For example, for the man who recently joined my organization, I focused on the fact that he is a fitness trainer and is in incredible shape. I mentioned that I was excited to find out if he saw how he might incorporate the weight management products my company markets into his work with his fitness clients. Use word pictures to paint a mental image of how the person you are speaking with may benefit from what you have to offer. When I enrolled a public school teacher, I asked her if she was open to having an event to which we invite other teachers who, like her, wanted to earn more money. I also told her that I was excited to put her teaching skills to work since much of this business entails training others. Use your imagination to help people see how they can work within their communities and within their own circles of influence to help expand the network. You must help people visualize themselves being successful.

The sequence is fairly predictable, although variations will present themselves. For example, what begins as a discussion about the business might evolve into a conversation in which someone decides to be a customer. The opposite can happen as well. The key is to be flexible and to listen to what the other person wants and-just as importantly-what she says she is willing to do. If someone tells you that she would never, ever consider taking nutritional products-or whatever your product happens to be-that she doesn't believe in them, and that she has no interest whatsoever to understand the benefits, you can try to convert her, but I do not recommend this. In a situation like this, there is probably too much resistance. A new associate who repeatedly tries to convert people in this way might actually quit the business because working against people who are very close-minded is incredibly unpleasant.

PRESENTING

The most successful business leaders learn how to give an excellent presentation of their company's products and business. The best network marketing companies provide their distributors with standard presentations in a number of formats, which highlight the company's business and products. Top distributors may also share presentations that they themselves develop or modify. Whether you're a new associate or you have been in the business for a while and now want to move to the next level, the smartest way to acquire and hone your presentation skills is to continually tune into presentations provided by your company and its top distributors. If possible, acquire a recording of one of these excellent presentations and have it transcribed. This will be an invaluable basis for your own presentation. It may take you a few months to become proficient at giving a top-notch presentation, and you will definitely have to practice quite a few times. But doing so will reward you for the rest of your networking career.

Working with a variety of personality types has taught me the importance of my being adaptive while building personal connections with prospective customers and associates. If you are super-high-energy or have an aggressive personality you may need to tone it down just a tad to make sure that you are not overwhelming the person you are speaking with. If you tend toward introversion and are very soft spoken or even shy, you should become more animated and perhaps more assertive when giving a presentation. In either case, learning how to move toward the middle is good practice for learning to be a more expressive, well-rounded person. Whatever you can do to enhance your ability to connect with another person will be good for your business and good for your own personal development. Top earners in network marketing continually practice their people skills, seeking to master the art of connecting with others. They also tend to be genuinely enthusiastic and excited about their products and business. This is something worth striving toward if you want to take your business to the next level.

As one who enrolls new associates on a consistent basis, I have studied and practiced numerous aspects of communication, persuasion, influence, listening, and selling. I realize that when I am sitting across from a prospective customer or associate I can make or break a conversation that could alter the course of this person's life. Because it is my intention to bring on as many qualified new team members as possible, I have a few personal mandates that shape every presentation I give. It is the direct communication of these core values that I believe supports my ability to consistently bring new people into my organization. You too can practice these.

• People will encounter hurdles as they consider the business. You can address these hurdles one at a time and discuss them openly as you move along in the discussion. For instance, one hurdle that people frequently encounter is that this is a home-based business. You should mention that although we interact with other people regularly, there is typically no office outside of the home where we conduct business. Find out what the other person thinks about this. I have released many individuals who were 100% positive that they wanted a regular nine-to-five job and had no interest in learning about alternatives. Discuss the benefits of your products openly and ask the prospect if she would tell others about them if she knew what to say and how to say it. We train our new associates. Is the person you are sitting across from trainable? It takes about ten hours a week to launch a business like this. Is that feasible? You should identify the hurdles relevant to your opportunity and discuss them frankly.
• Think continuously that you are helping the person you are speaking with understand the value of your company's products and business opportunity. Your job is to explain how the products work, how we make money, what the training entails, and what the lifestyle benefits are. When presenting, the more you help, the more your business will grow.
• Engage your prospect. A great presentation is more a conversation and less a lecture. Ask for feedback. Encourage questions and concerns. You want the other person to participate in moving this conversation forward. As part of your discussion, explore the benefits for the prospective associate. How many ways can you see eye-to-eye with this person with whom you are considering a working relationship? The mini-agreements that you create with the other person become the building blocks for forming a full-fledged business partnership.
• In Influencer, the authors (Patterson, Grenny, Maxfield, McMillan, and Switzler) state that if we want to influence someone to do something, it is important to be trustworthy. Avoiding hype and manipulative alterations of the truth will enable you to be even more influential. Trustworthiness trumps exaggeration every time and is a key ingredient among members of a stable organization. The no-hype rule begins when you first speak with a prospect, and continues well into the presentation and beyond.
• Have your prospect's best interest at heart. When your intentions are pure, you can help the person you are speaking with to be more open and receptive. Ask the person you are speaking with to consider you as an advisor. Let her know that you will be considering everything about her situation as you make recommendations.

STAYING IN THE CONVERSATION

If you want to put to rest any concerns you have about your prospective associate or customer's objections, ask for them. You can say this. "Jamie, along the way hopefully you will have questions and concerns. Let's make sure to get them out in the open and I will address them as best I can." When you discuss her concerns with her in this way it helps her feel that you are there to help. If you hear an objection that you do not know how to address, tell her that you think it is a terrific question, and that you would like to do some research, or perhaps bring someone to the discussion who has more experience than you do.

You can guide a conversation toward higher ground with a positive attitude. Saying "I am so pleased how this conversation went today" conveys to the prospect that you are not attached to a different outcome, you accept his position, you appreciate his concerns, that you don't need for him to make a decision today, and other subtle cues that keep him engaged. Recently, I spoke with a woman who apologized for not wanting to meet with me until she had seen the on-line web tour. I told her that was an excellent decision and I looked forward to sending her the link. It doesn't matter if I wanted to meet with her in person if she was not ready or if that is not what she wanted. By having her decision validated, she feels good about the next step, and we can move forward together. In fact, during this particular conversation, she started off sounding skeptical and hesitant. By the end of the conversation she thanked me and told me how much she was looking forward to reconnecting with me the next week.

TIME TO ENROLL

By the time you have gone over all of the material, you may have a new friend. The person who is sitting opposite from you has gotten a sense of you. She feels honored and supported. The encouragement you have offered along the way has been genuine and personal. You have addressed her questions openly and responsibly and she knows that you have her best interest at heart.

I always let a prospective associate know that the outcome will be up to her. If she wants to move slowly, I will be a step ahead of her with fresh ideas to help her achieve the goals she sets for herself. If she wants to move very fast, I will be a step ahead of her to ensure that she gets exactly what she needs to move her business along quickly. I let her know what she can count on me for, and we talk about what is expected of her in terms of contributing to the organization. What special talents does she have from which the rest of the group can benefit? Teachers are encouraged to teach, fitness trainers are encouraged to present the benefits of the products to athletes, and corporate warriors are asked to shed light on organization development. I help people feel that they can make a difference to the entire group.

By now in the process, everything has been discussed and an enrollment is the natural next step. The person who is right for this business will often self-enroll by asking you what is required to become an associate. A pattern has emerged in which everything has been talked about openly. Trust has been established, and you have moved together toward a partnership. A seasoned associate knows the difference between encouraging someone at the right time, and pushing back against someone's resistance. The former feels good and will make you want to keep doing this business. It is a function of sensing when someone is ready for the next step, and having your encouragement align with the person's eagerness. The latter causes both parties to feel uncomfortable and explains why some people want to quit so early on. Trying to get someone to do something against his will is very different from helping him get what he wants. When you sense that someone is excited and ready to join your organization, offering to help him become a member of your team is the natural progression.

When you help people feel good about starting their business with you, you increase the chances that they will want to continue to be in business with you and will want others to join them. A lasting partnership starts with you as the person whom others trust. You have been impeccable every step along the way and you have earned your title as leader.

You have not tried to force the wrong person into your business. You have focused all of your energy in working with people who participated with you, in moving the process forward. You didn't push against people. You were in the flow. Imagine that the person you are working with could become an asset to your organization forever.

Have you ever watched the television series, The Apprentice? In one episode, each team was asked to create a business from scratch.
The interesting thing is that neither of the businesses created were really sustainable. Why? Because each team set themselves up in a business that revolved around them selling time.

One team did face painting; the other set up a gardening business. After each team had done the task for a couple of days, they counted how much money they had made.

The actual figures aren't important, because the money didn't really count for anything. Both teams had to use the bulk of their income to pay employees for the time they spent performing tasks. So, neither of those businesses turned out to be profitable.

When Sir Alan Sugar, the host of the show, didn't haul them over the coals more for it, I realized how strong this whole concept of selling time is in society.

As a business owner, you don't want to follow this type of thinking. Doing this will not help you to build a profitable, sustainable business.

The solution is to build an information empire. The whole point of an information empire is that you don't want to be selling your time. You do want to repackage your know-how and your expertise into products and programs that don't require all of your attention all of the time. You may have to spend some time delivering programs, but not the bulk of your time.

This is the way to build a sustainable business. Because the paradox of selling your time is that the more successful you are, the less time you have. And, while you can always find more clients, you cannot create more time, no matter how hard you try.

But, with an information empire, time is no longer an issue. It will become possible for you to create more money, regardless of how much time you have. You simply need to stop linking the money you make to the time and effort you put in to your business. Once you truly understand this, creating more money will become easier to do.

It can be difficult to accept this concept. You might be thinking, "I don't know that you can always get money. Making money has not been that easy for me."

But the truth is, there is always money flowing. Even in this current economy, with the credit crunch and the recession, money is still flowing. It's just flowing in different places from where it was flowing previously. It is up to you to find the source of that stream and collect it.

The key is to carefully examine your business to find ways of serving many clients at one time, rather than serving each client individually. Once you develop the products and services that allow you to do this, your business will be fully sustainable, without you having to wish for more hours in the day.

The medical industry is one which uses many terms which are derived from Latin. If you've ever taken an anatomy class for instance, you'll have learned many of the scientific terms for the various parts of our bodies, most of which are Latin in origin. As mentioned, this is also referred to as emergency courier service. Every Franchise system should have a clear understanding of the following concepts. In addition, they should have a clear marketing strategy to help their Franchisees communicate to customers and prospects about how they will deliver these currencies as they operate their Franchise.
Trade. Give something to get something. Our inhabited globe has come a long way
since the act of trade meant that 'I'll give you one caribou if you give me three

baskets of carrots and a cord of wood'. However, that same basic tenet still drives

all economic transactions. Value for value is the test. If we can create more value then we can get more value back when we auction ours. The only difficulty is that the definition of value is ever-changing. Therefore it would make sense that if we can figure out who defines value, we will be able to create and deliver more of it.

Remember from the discussion about Basic Business Concepts that 'It's all about the customer'. So if we accept that it's all about the customer then it follows that the customer is the beast that defines value. Seems simple. Seems basic. Seems unchallengeable.

O.K. so how do we figure out what the customer defines as value? It seems to make sense that we need to find ways to ask the customers that we choose to serve. We need to ask them to define what they find more and more valuable. We also need to accept that the definition of today will not be the same definition of tomorrow. At some point, somebody figured out that the customer wanted a fatter caribou, and if a fatter caribou was delivered, then four baskets of carrots and some extra wood could be obtained. They probably asked the carrot guy.

Study of business customers in today's world will reveal that there are some basic currencies of trade that hold value for the customer. Understanding these basic currencies will help to define the specific methods and characteristics that are required of the product or service you provide to meet the value definition of your customer.

Money

This is the most accepted version of currency in most people's minds. In fact, money is used in our common language synonymously with currency. I propose that it is only one currency, albeit the one we trade with in commercial transactions most apparently.

In reality, it's just the bridge between the caribou and the carrots. I mean, surely people don't really want a stack of paper. No, they want the carrots if they've already got a bunch of caribou. Our forefathers have simply been able to structure a system where the paper can be traded for stuff, and stuff can be traded for paper - and we're all willing to abide by this trading system.

So a dressmaker is willing to trade one of his dresses for some paper. The landlord is willing to rent part of her space to the dressmaker to display dresses in return for some of his paper. The grocer will accept the landlord's paper for some carrots - no caribou required.

We all get this one. So if we know that one of the currencies that businesses desire is money, then our products and services must be able to help our customers gain more money. It seems simple but I'm not sure we have that goal firmly in mind when we illustrate our wares. However, just like the system of trading stuff for paper is simple, so is the concept that we need to show our customers how they can gain more money by doing business with us. The better we can communicate that message, the more attractive our goods and services will be to our desired customers.

Time

Any desired commodity, currency in the case of this discussion, increases in value as it increases in scarcity. Although we were all hoodwinked into believing that the computer revolution of the 1980's was going to make us so efficient that we would have gobs of time on our hands, I don't think there are too many converts to that ascribed belief any longer.

When we discuss our clients' need for more time in their respective businesses, during our training class for all new Schooley Mitchell Franchisees, I always relate the following story. The scene was at a National Franchise Convention waiting for the kick-off speaker to begin the proceedings. There were several hundred Franchisors like me sitting in the convention hall, when from the back of the room this guy entered, flipping a head of lettuce up and down. He walked right up the middle aisle continually flipping the leafy orb. There were a few snickers because it was apparent to some that an inmate had gone over the wall at the local asylum.

With a determined look, and a single purpose in mind, this guy trotted right up to the front of the room, climbed onto the stage, and leapt behind the podium. With a greatly threatening look, he bellowed, "Somebody in this room tell me why this head of lettuce represents the most important concept that you must understand for your business to survive in the next decade!" He was completely fired up, spittle was flying, and he was turning red. At this point half the room was convinced of the asylum scenario, while the other half realized that this was actually the guest speaker.

Gliding down a bit from his commando high, he said, "O.K., I want to ask you a couple of questions." He went on to say, "I want you to think back ten years, picture in your mind your local grocery store, and tell me how many square feet were dedicated to heads of lettuce at 79 cents each." After a bit of a pregnant pause, someone in the audience yelled out, "30 square feet."

Our now calm and seemingly rational speaker now asked, "O.K we can accept that answer, so now flash forward ten years to today and somebody tell me how many square feet are dedicated to heads of lettuce in today's grocery store at 89 cents." The answer came back as ten square feet.

The next question was, "Now somebody tell me how many square feet are dedicated to prepared salads at $4.95 each." The revelation was clear. Yes, that's where the other 20 square feet went - in fact, the current stores may even use more than 20 feet! The crowd was elated that they had solved the riddle.

Then in a very quiet, almost ominous tone he asked, "So what is that about and why does it matter so much to your business?" His message was of course that it was about time. We are willing to pay good money, already conceded to be a valuable currency, to save ourselves time. We will pay a premium to avoid cutting carrots and cucumbers, and in my mind I plead guilty to the act. In fact, he said, "Time is the currency of today's economy, and you need to figure out how you are delivering time to your customers, or you will not thrive."

The story hit hard, made a strong and valid point, and I have been thoroughly convinced of the importance of time as a currency of trade ever since. The challenge of course is to figure out how to deliver time to our customers. Before we can do that we have to figure out how we can make it clear to our customers that we will, in fact, help them to gain time through our wares.

Money and time are certainly the most recognizable and widely accepted of the currencies of trade. However, it is my belief that we also trade in Security, Knowledge and Prestige. These currencies will be reviewed in more detail in a subsequent release, but for now, suffice it to say that we need to feel secure, not only physically, but also that we have made the right decisions. We also crave knowledge. In fact, we live in a knowledge-based society now. The vast majority of people trade for prestige as well. Otherwise, why would we wear what we wear, drive what we drive, live where we live?

Money, time, security, knowledge and prestige make up the suite of Currencies of Trade. So the challenge is how to deliver these items, and how to make our customers aware of how we deliver them.

The Federal Sentencing Guidelines adopted in the U.S. A. in 1991 represent an important input into this debate and especially in the cultivation of business practices. This model of good corporate citizenship is designed on the basis of compliance approach and stresses the concept of due diligence. It requires companies set up compliance standards to be followed (communicated, trained, enforced sanctioned).

Personal, as well as collective, responsibility requires two conditions: freedom and intention (awareness of the moral character of an action). Basically, responsibility involves three components: the subject who bears responsibility that cannot be completely determined by rules and laws; for what the subject is responsible (the spheres of responsibility); and the authority to whom the subject is accountable. We have to go further and try to evaluate the degree of responsibility or the kind of the ethical challenge involved. It is suggested in the business ethics literature to distinguish between minimal ethical requirements, positive obligations beyond the minimum, and aspirations for ethical ideals. The first degree includes basic ethical norms such as do not kill, not rob, not exploit, etc. Going further means that it is becoming more and more difficult to find consensus than in the first case. Here is a broad space of freedom and inspiration companies (acting with integrity) can use to define their mission, build their culture and reputation.

From a very vague concept of social responsibility of the whole system, where it was hard to find concrete bearers of this responsibility, and to define their responsibility in a totalitarian regime (the condition of freedom was not fulfilled), which by its behavior in fact discredited the idea of social responsibility, at present we find ourselves in a very different environment. With democratization of our societies and market of the economies, new actors have emerged. They play various roles in the economy, and have also various interests. Consequently, companies and other organizations in this new system have to deal with various new stakeholders (mainly shareholders, management, employees, competitors, suppliers, creditors, local community where the business operates, global community). What is their responsibility towards the stakeholders? This is a crucial question which is being raised by businesses all around the developed world, and also by the academic sphere. Neither business, nor academics have fully answered this question. Moreover, there is not a consensus on the stakeholders' model itself (in some perceptions, only shareholders are important). I would like to even broaden this problem and to interpret it in the political and economic context of emerging market economies. The identification of various responsibilities from both sides could help to improve the business environment and even to clarify some basic concepts or categories of the market system.

The Car Allowance Rebate System Program - Should it Be Repeated?

The CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) program commonly referred to as the cash for clunkers program was established by the US federal government in 2009. The objective of the program was two pronged. On one hand, the US government wanted to increase automotive sales so as to jump start the economy and on the other hand the government wanted to protect the environment by getting rid of harmful gas guzzlers.

Now that the program is over, it is only fair to look back in retrospect and ponder over a few questions namely: How much did the program cost per automobile and should this program be repeated at a later point in time?

To answer the first question, it is important to know how many vehicles were sold during the entire duration of the program. In addition to knowing how many vehicles were sold, it is equally important to determine the incremental sales. Incremental sales basically refer to the sales that resulted from the program as opposed to the sales that would have happened regardless of the program. The last variable needed to compute the cost per automobile is the total cost of the entire program. According to Edmunds.com, the premier source for online automotive information, 690,000 vehicles were sold during the entire duration of the cash for clunkers program. 125,000 of the sales were incremental. The entire program cost the Government $3 Billion. Therefore, $3 Billion divided by 125,000 vehicles yields $24,000 per vehicle. The figure derived from the calculation refers to how much the program cost per automobile.

In order to answer the second question exhaustively and establish whether the program should be repeated, it is important to answer the following question. Was this the best method out of all the alternative methods the US Government had on its plate? Before going any further, I acknowledge the fact that providing an answer to this question is tricky in the sense that only an insider can be able to answer this question. Having knowledge of the alternative methods that constitutes the opportunity set can enable us to pinpoint quantitatively that the cash for clunkers program was the best program and should definitely be repeated. Calculating the opportunity cost in this case is difficult because we cannot calculate the total cost of the alternative methods. We only know the cost of the program. As a result, a quantitative comparison of the cost is next to impossible. Therefore, response to the above question "Should the program be repeated" will be limited to a qualitative analysis of the program.

A key component of the qualitative analysis is determining to what extent the cash for clunkers program was successful in accomplishing its set objectives. If the program failed to meet its objectives, then justification for a repeat performance will be complicated by failure. In other words, the US Government will have a gigantic task proving to congress that such a program is worth the time, money and effort. As stated earlier, one of the objectives was to increase automotive sales so as to jumpstart the economy. Clearly, the sales increased alright as evidenced by the 125,000 incremental sales of vehicles. However, the economy is still not as strong as expected. The government had hoped that an increase in sales would trigger a chain reaction that would culminate in an increase in jobs. The unemployment rate is at 10%. This goes to show that the program was partially successful in meeting its objectives. However, more work is needed and more alternatives should be considered if the overall goal is to improve the economy.

In as far as the environmental objective is concerned; evidence of success will more than likely be completely visible in a few years. At this point in time, it is still too early to tell the impact of the program on the environment. However, certain key pointers suggest that the program will prove to be beneficial to the environment in the long run. Cars impact the environment through the emission rates of harmful gases to the atmosphere. As a result of stringent emission regulations on new vehicles, properly functioning control systems and lower per mile emission rates in new vehicles, newer cars have less negative impact on the environment as opposed to older cars. In the "Cash for Clunkers" program, older cars were traded in for newer fuel efficient cars. Therefore, as a result of the decrease in older cars, one can logically come to the conclusion that the negative impact on the environment can be minimized through getting rid of older cars.

From a personal perspective, only time will tell whether or not the program should be repeated. The state of the economy, the long term impact on the economy, long term effect on the environment, overall cost and purse string considerations are all factors to be considered. However, time holds the answer. Only time will tell.

It is the job of the Human Resources department to take care of any problems that may arise between individuals or between one individual and the business or institution.

Human Resources (HR)

The Human Resources (or HR) department, for the most part, strays from business related practices and concentrates on how work is performed by people within a company and how people relate to each other. They are also the number one department that employees count on when a dispute or problem arises within his or her department. An employee usually tries to speak with his or her boss about a situation, and when nothing comes of it, the HR department is the next place to go to in order to ensure that everything is taken care of and that an employee's and employer's needs are met.

Unfortunately, people who work in HR are still people and therefore still subject to working under their own boss and making biased decisions. If the supervisor of an HR member decides that a claim is outrageous and needs not be concerned, then the HR member is likely to listen to the supervisor. In some cases, employees have complained of a certain situation in the job place to HR and were fired or "laid off" not long after. Both these sorts of cases may grant an employee compensation in the court of law.

Employer Relations

I really didn't give much thought to the Libertarian Party or Libertarians in general until a few months ago. At that time I had the good fortune of having lunch at the Paris Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada with Mr. Wayne Allyn Root. Mr. Root was the Libertarian Party's candidate for Vice President in 2008 and will be the party's candidate for President in 2012. To say the least it was an eye opening meeting. The

more I have learned about Libertarians since then, the more I like them.

Libertarians are committed to a smaller federal government with less control of our daily lives. They believe in lower taxes and personal responsibility. They believe that what you do in your own home or bedroom is none of the government's business. In 1776 when Benjamin Franklin designed a United States silver coin with the motto-"Mind Your Own Business" engraved on the reverse, he was expressing the mindset of a Libertarian.

Their message is just what this country needs. Take responsibility for your own actions. Let businesses sink or swim on their own merits. Limit taxes and regulations so that small businesses have a fighting chance to succeed. Realize that government never produces any money; all it ever does is spend your money.

If you want to succeed in life it is a good idea to think like a Libertarian. Don't expect government hand outs and don't whine. Don't make a lot of rules that will interfere with the freedom of others. Work with other people to help them get what they want and you will get what you want. These are basic business principles, yet in an atmosphere of bail outs and entitlements, many individuals seem to have forgotten them.

Do you have a dream? Is there an entrepreneur inside you yearning to get free? There is an endless supply of people who would love to break free from the rigid 9-5 treadmill of the hourly wage earner. Most of those people will never take the steps necessary to change their lives. They will be shackled by fear and pressure to be just go along with the majority. Intermodal Containers

Intermodal containers are a method of transporting cargo in bulk, either inland or overseas. They are also called freight or shipping containers. These units need to be built to ISO (the International Organisation for Standardisation) which set the standards for transporting overseas or across national borders.

These standards were originally drafted by the United States defence department for use by the military. The ISO adapted these articles for international use in the late 1960s and early 70s and this has led to the development of shipping containers that can be used all around the world. Being able to use a standard unit when shipping cargo is obviously very important in today's global market with freight being transported all around the world. As an example, the 48ft and 53ft container sizes are the standard size for shipping cargo across oceans. This standard was set by the International Organisation for Standardisation in November 2007.

Intermodal containers come in various types and sizes. Extra-sized versions are known a high-cube unit. Typical examples are the 20 ft dry van, the 40ft dry van and the high-cube 40 ft dry van unit. There is also the 45 ft dry van as well as specialised refrigerated varieties.

Intermodal containers are also built to carry specialised loads. Examples of these include flatrack and platform, tank, bulk and autorack containers. There are also specialised units for the carrying of products such as gas cylinders, generators, water purification systems and lift accessories.

Intermodal containers can be transported either by ship, by train or by road. The ISO has ensured standardised freight that be switched between the various modes of transport, hence the development of large container ports. The main advantage of having a common standard is that freight can also be switched between the various modes of transport without having to be unpacked, as it can be lifted by cranes specially built for the task.

When being transported by rail, the various networks around the world pose some problems for modern freight traffic. In the UK some parts of the network do not allow for the carriage of high-cube containers whilst most rail links on the continent of Europe allow only single stacked units to be carried. But India, and parts of the Chinese rail network, can carry the double stacked variety.

The other problem with running any kind of consultancy, is that time, of itself, has no intrinsic value, only the value we ascribe to it. What you can charge for your time - and clients' perceived value of your service - is dependent on a lot of external factors, such as market conditions and the state of the economy.

That's why it's a good idea, early on in your practice, to see if it's worthwhile to stop referring to what you sell as 'billable time' in favor of finding another descriptor that forestalls a lot of arguments. One way to get away from wrangles over what you could do with your time is to start referring to what you offer as your 'inventory' or your 'capacity'. These terms offer more concrete visualizations to the client and will put a damper on some of their unreasonable expectations.

This way, you'll never be at risk of blurting out "But I don't have enough time!". With the time argument, people can always suggest that you can find some more - "Couldn't you fit it into your lunch hour? You can skip going to your school kid's school performance" and so on. If you say instead: "Sorry, I'm all out of inventory" or "Geez, we'd love to help you but we're already at full capacity utilization until the first week of next month", it weakens their arguments that you can just fit in one more thing.

There will never be any more hours in the day than the current 24, just as there will always only be 7 days in a full week and five or fewer in a working week. Referring to what you offer in the more concrete terms of inventory or capacity will put what you offer on a more business-like footing - and help you save some free time for yourself!

Serpentine tables are generally used in dining facilities to create an interest in how food is served or as a main table. Some facilities want to buy a tablecloth that drapes over or some want skirting and others want fitted cloth or fitted drop-overs to accommodate these odd shaped tables. Whatever design you want you must give the proper measurements so the cloth can be made properly.

Serpentine tables are like no others to cover because they have 4 measurements for tablecloths to fit correctly. Most people get the linear dimensions from the table manufacturer and think these dimensions will suffice, they don't. These measurements are designed to aid the purchaser in knowing how much space they will take on their dining floor or in storage. These measurements are much like getting a tape measure and measuring a person's height and then measuring the widest part of a person. Try making a piece of clothing to cover this person. It won't work because it doesn't take into account all the needed measurements to fit.

Serpentine tables unlike other tables, except maybe a half moon, need a cloth to contour to its shape not just cover it overall.

Some other tables commercially used are called feeder tables which are the same configuration as serpentines but are not as wide. Either way the formula to measure is the same.

First in this instance you must has a soft tape measure not a rigid one. Using the concept of a horseshoe take the tape measure and follow the curve of the outer portion of the table this is known as the outer arc, i.e., it is 96 inches, then measure the curve of the inner arc or inside of the table, i.e., it is 46 inches, next the width of the table, i.e., this is 30 inches then the height, which is normally but not always 30 inches. A quick note always measure from the top of the table to the floor or bottom of the table legs, if the table has wheels measure above the wheels.

* Take the advice of your media advertising representative. They want you to succeed. A small advert placed frequently works better than the occasional larger one. Always use USP (unique selling points). Special offers for example.
* If you live in a bi-lingual area it doesn't cost much to make your website bi-lingual. You wouldn't put a notice on your door: 'English Speakers Only' would you? If the wording of your website or brochure is amateurish you will invite ridicule, not orders.
* Make better use of e-mails. They are real sales boosters when you know how. They have at least ten advantages over the telephone. I will list these shortly or e-mail me if you miss them.
* Poor signage is a no-no. How often I have heard it said: 'But our customers know where we are." Hello! The new ones do not. An attractive high visibility sign will be seen by hundreds, perhaps thousands a day.
* First impressions count. Sales are lost when potential clients telephone an answering machine. A telephone answering machine cannot answer questions, which is why most people call in the first place. Be polite; listen and respond transparently.
* If you are in business then being a sales person comes with the territory. Improve your people skills; be pleasant, informative, highlight the advantages of your service, and ask politely for the order. Never ignore a spouse or partner.
* If you don't get the close right you won't close. Be a pully-pully salesperson: Ask the customer; 'Which would you prefer?' or 'Would Tuesday be alright or might Wednesday be better for you?'
* Clients are offended and inconvenienced by poor timekeeping. If you are unavoidably delayed call them; explain; invite their understanding or suggest an alternative in order to avoid inconveniencing them.

* It is infuriating to be given a bill without a break down. If you do so you invite the allegation that you are cheating or over-pricing. Again, transparency keeps customers happy. Happy customers are your best sales staff.
* A man bought a business. The first thing he did was ask for a list of dormant clients. He discovered most had left due to poor service. By informing them of the change of ownership and addressing their concerns he learned lessons. Best of all he enticed most back.
* Always leave two or three business cards in your customer's home or premises; where they can be seen. Respectfully ask your customer to recommend you and ask if they have friends or family who may be interested in your service. The most important rule of all: Always thank your client for their custom.

Usually, when you check the status of your courier shipment, the message that you receive will be fairly generic. Typically you will see what city your package passed through more recently. You might see an exact location if you have GPS tracking of the package enabled. You're going to do everything in your power to always make sure that your packages are ready for your courier to pick up at your scheduled pickup time. However, despite your best efforts, sometimes things happen. The most important thing for you to do in this situation is to contact your courier company as soon as possible. Couriers do understand that things can go wrong during the course of your production week. Machines break down, orders get cancelled, and any number of other eventualities can occur. Some though, will have the ability to receive notifications about deliveries that are not going to be ready. Failing that, just email or phone your company directly to let them know. Phoning is better closer to the actual pickup time, as emails can be overlooked.

THE DREAM
I'm sure there are many more people that would LIKE to be in business than actually ARE in business. The fantasy of having a lot of money, power and prestige is certainly a great one. Also, the feeling of being responsible for huge amounts of product, having a big payroll, large home with vacations to everywhere, and toys for all the leisure time.

It's easy to imagine all that and more. So much so that most of us have made some attempt to get something started business wise. The truth is (statistically) that less than one in ten businesses make it past the first year and less than one in ten of THEM last more than five years. How about those odds? Most of us aren't that tenacious. Just think about it.

THE REALITY

The hardest part of starting a successful business has to be choosing the right one. It doesn't matter how good you are or how hard you work if you're trying to do something that isn't viable. As hard as that would be to figure out, it would be just the beginning, Then would come the business plan. That has to be something lenders can believe in order to get financing.

We've all heard how important location can be to success. Well, your timing has to be good to find the right place at the right time. Then (if all that happens to pan out) the work has just started. There is the advertising and the promotions and the actual production (if you're making a product) or the service (in that case).

And guess what? If you get it all going and rolling along (reinvesting all the while) one stubborn recession can wipe it all out.

CONCLUSION

So, next time you see someone that hasn't made it yet, don't be too hard on them. They've probably made an effort somewhere along the way. Maybe even offer some encouragement for the future.

Green trade is incorporating itself into main stream businesses today surprisingly well despite opposition. This is so because tell-tale signs of our over consumption of the worlds natural resources, such as melting ice caps and rising lakes and ocean levels, are undeniable evidence that our actions, including trade, are having an affect on the planet.

No longer can the world afford to overlook green trade when abuse of our natural world continues. Everyone needs to help; that includes individuals, statewide and national and international groups. Steps towards sustainability can include small efforts such as household recycling, state and national legislation enforcing laws prohibiting wrongful use of forests, water systems and fossil fuels, and businesses that are willing to lead the way through sustainable efforts.

Green trade is essential for both importers and exporters. Both of whom have an ethical responsibility to clients to ensure practices such as safe waste management and suitable working environments for employees are met.

More and more countries and businesses are demanding that trade is conducted in a sustainable and green manner. If these requests are not met, environmental organisations can step in and show the way by refusing to sell to or buy from countries or private enterprises that don't meet green trade requirements and who refuse to negotiate. National and international groups are formed that set up guidelines and time limits on what to expect within certain time frames.

Each country will have different fossil fuel needs and concerns and this is taken into consideration when these guidelines are set up. Some areas of the world are better at meeting the green trade regulations than others. Carbon offsets are put into place which allow these countries to buy into the overall environment movement. These carbon offsets allow poorer countries to contribute to sustainability while still enabling them to develop as a nation.

From a business level it is essential to get acquainted with your own community and your state and see what measures are being put in place towards green trade. If you are importing or exporting goods and services what measures are you putting in place? If your country doesn't have strict rules and regulations in place already, what can you, as a business, do to help move this forward? And what obligations do you have above and beyond the general greed trade laws in your industry? These are all important questions all businesses should be asking to ensure green trade not only grows, but becomes an industry standard across the board.

Talk is cheap, but action takes commitment and green trade has plenty of both. What is not to be denied, however, is the common sense approach in protecting our world. It makes sense that those making the most money from the natural resources that are consumed in their manufacturing processes should be the ones leading the way toward a more equitable market, however change often occurs due to smaller businesses rising to the challenge and showing the way.

HIPPA states that you must have a written policy in place for dispersal of patient information, so be sure that you do that, and that you follow your own written policy at all times. If you do that, you shouldn't have any problems, and should be able to keep your patient's information safe.

Basics of Consumer Behavior That Will Help You Make Money, Part One

A good way to start the business year is to remind ourselves of how unpredictable consumer behavior is. The more we understand about why people purchase what they do, the better we can design our marketing messages. There are 10 basics of buying behavior that can help you make money, in today's post I'll cover five of them, and in Part Two I'll talk about the second set of five.

Understanding why people purchase when they do is no easy task. The field of behavioral economics indulges in marketing research and can give us some insight. Here are ten things we know about consumer behavior, and how you can put them to use as a small biz owner.

Tenet One: The need to express one's individuality is a critical factor influencing the choice of brand that someone will buy. What does this mean? Well, if you've got this type of consumer on your hands, you want to offer a product or service that seems unique and very individualized to the person. If you are selling braided leather bracelets, for instance, this person is going to want a leather bracelet that isn't braided, or a colored leather, or a braided bracelet with a customized charm at the end. If you are selling your cleaning services, offering a menu of tasks you do and asking this person to personalize it to their own home will make them feel they are getting a unique "brand."

Tenet Two: Keep it simple. Too many choices confuse a buyer, and as I've preached for years now, a confused mind does not buy. If you offer 17 different products and services, simplify it down to no more than three. Group your products and services by broad category and let the buyer choose what she most needs. A few weeks ago, I met a concierge service owner and asked about her business. To my horror, she enthusiastically told me "we can do anything you need." That doesn't help most buyers, who will quickly glaze over and not be able to think about what they need at that particular moment in time. A better answer would be, "We handle shopping for gifts, office organization, and party planning." The buyer's mind will then sort and land on something she recently needed that falls into one of these large categories. Give a buyer a place to land and you'll do a better job of selling.

Tenet Three: Use decoys when you package your options. Let's say you are offering three different options for house cleaning. Make the middle option the package that you really most want to sell. Most people will select the middle option, not wanting to go with the absolute lowest cost option but then not being willing to spring for the very highest, either. So make the middle option the one you really want to sell, the one that is the most profitable for you. The others are, in essence, decoys.

Another way to use a decoy is to actually use a competitor's product or service up against your own. Point out the added value or benefit that you have, and that your competitor doesn't have. For instance, you may sell a face care product not that different from another product - but yours may offer 20% more product for the money. Or, it may have an added benefit that the "decoy" competition doesn't have.

Tenet Four: You set the anchor for your price. In retail operations, the suggested retail price is the anchor, the price at which you want a buyer to compare your goods with others they may buy. In nonprofit organizations, you set an anchor by suggesting levels of giving in a campaign. It's also possible to re-anchor prices and change a buyer's expectation. One of the most familiar and successful examples of re-anchoring is when Starbucks began. Starbucks re-anchored the price of a cup of coffee much higher than it was in any other coffee establishment by convincing buyers that the coffee and the experience was of much higher value than in a McDonald's or a Dunkin' Donuts.

Tenet Five: How you package what you offer makes a big difference. In marketing research, this phenomena is called sensation transference. It means that buyers will transfer the sensations they have about the packaging of a product or service to the actual item itself. For instance, people will report that the food served on a paper plate doesn't taste as good as the very same food served on a china plate. The "packaging" of the china plate transfers a better sensation. Brandy and perfume manufacturers heavily depend on sensation transference. You've probably heard before that the design of a bottle of perfume is often more expensive than the actual design of the perfume itself. The packaging makes all the difference in the success or failure of that particular scent.

There are many ways you can use packaging to help your sales. If you are a residential developer, packaging may include a fancy entrance to your neighborhood. If you are a coach, packaging might mean the extra little bonuses you offer people to work with you - things like a personalized planner, a private forum, a special event offered at no charge as part of the "package" of the coaching offer.

A Brief History of the Canton Fair

Trades fairs are exhibitions where industry leaders showcase new products and services in order to promote them and encourage professional interest in them. During a typical trade fair, new products and services are demonstrated and reviewed and representatives attending the fair get to learn about what products their competitors are manufacturing and what the latest marketing and developments trends are in their industry. Trade fairs are also either open to the public ("Public" fairs) or are for company representatives only ("Trade Only" fairs). Importers and
exporters can particularly benefit from attending trade fairs as they are able to determine, respectively, which new products would do well in their countries and which countries their products would sell in.

The Canton Fair is a Trade Only show that exhibits products and services in both the consumer and industry sectors and which concentrates mainly on export trade. April 1957 saw the very first Canton Fair being held in the former Sino-Soviet Friendship Building in North Guangzhou. The Friendship Building's exhibition space was spread over 18,000 sq.m. and was able to contain the entire fair. Several years later the fair was moved to the Liuhua Complex and remained there for many years. Recent fairs have taken place in Guangzhou's enormous China Import and Export Fair Complex, however, and, with 1,125,000 sq.m. of exhibition space now available - and fully occupied - the fair is now a very different exhibition from that which debuted in 1957.

Like previous Canton fairs, the 2010 fair will be organised by the China Foreign Trade Centre and co-hosted by the People's Republic of China's Ministry of Commerce and the Guangdong Provincial Government. The fair has shown steady growth in both volume and turnover over the years and thus deserves its appellation of China's No.1 Trade Fair. The next fair is due to take place in Spring 2010 and will be the 107th Canton Fair. It will be attended by 48 trading delegations made up of the cream of Chinese industry as well as foreign trade companies, private enterprises and research institutes.

The Canton Fair is held every year in Spring and Autumn sessions of three phases each with the first session taking place in April/May and the second in October/November. Each phase usually lasts five days and showcases different product types. It is not for nothing that the fair is known as China's largest and, during the 206th fair, 188,170 overseas buyers spent 30,470 USD while inspecting products displayed in 55,927 standard booths set up by 21,934 national and 386 international exhibitors.

The different phases exhibit products that are representative of different sectors of consumer and industry manufacturing. The 209th fair's first phase showcased products like electronics and household electrical appliances, vehicles and spare parts, chemical products and lighting equipment. The first phase was also home to those booths belonging to the international exhibitors. The second phase included home decorations, gifts and consumer products while the third phase spotlighted medical products (medicines, medical devices and health products), food and native produce as well as clothing and office supplies (specifically cases, bags and recreation products).

In view of the above, China appears to be fully justified in claiming that their Canton Fair has "the largest scale", "the most complete exhibit variety" and "the greatest business turnover" of any exhibition in their country.

12 Reasons Why e-mail Beats the Telephone

It is 135 years since the telephone was invented yet most businesses largely depend on it to handle their communications. This bad habit is a business-killer. The horse and cart has been replaced by the delivery van; the town crier is history; newspapers now carry advertisements. Mysteriously the ancient telephone, companion to the telegram, semaphore signals and Morse code, is still in vogue.

Nearly everyone is familiar with e-mails so here are a few tips to make yours work for the improvement of your business. For a brilliant start always make sure your advertisements, signage and promotional literature includes your e-mail address prominently displayed.

WITH E-MAIL

You can give precise directions to visiting clients; even attach a map to make their trip easier. They will appreciate the thought that went into it.

E-mails can detail the services and prices you offer; if you own a restaurant menus can be e-mailed. Pre-ordering makes life easier for the kitchen staff whilst reducing your buying costs. Whatever your service you can e-mail details of the service you provide and price lists

Invite customers to leave their e-mail addresses. That way you can inform them of special offers; price reductions; entertainment bookings, holidays, opening and closing times.

We have all heard the expression, people don't buy products, they buy people. It is true. Pictures of your premises, staff; interior, can be sent to enquirers. This will help them to loyalty bond with your business.

If you hold events or are moving address, taking on a new manager, booking an entertainer, the e-mail can be used to inform your customers. The e-mail message will offer opportunity for you to place a 'signature'; a permanent sales message on every memo you send.

Invite customers to comment on your services. These can later be included in e-mails to reassure new clients. They are good for inviting suggestions too. Imagine, a free mystery shopping opportunity to give your business the vital edge.

You have some good news? Tell your customers; promotions, awards, and very important key selling points that identify your business as being perfect for their needs.

If a member of a trade association or body its logo and details can be permanently included in your e-mails too.

If it is appropriate places of local interest can be included. You can also invite visitors to browse complementary businesses whose owners will be happy to do likewise for you. When the phone rings you are obliged to answer it even if it is inconvenient for you to do so. Similarly you might have to get your timing right when making calls even though it interrupts your routine. Unlike the telephone call e-mails can be sent and replied to at your convenience.

Unlike the telephone the e-mail does not cost anything to use; contrasting the costly inconvenience of postal deliveries (snail mail) the e-mail can effortlessly handle bulk information without bumping up the cost of sending it. ©

Do You Know What Type of Courier You Need

Often when a customer needs a courier what they actually mean is they need a parcel courier or parcel delivery company. Time and money can be saved by establishing what kind of courier you need before you even pick up the phone and start getting quotes in for the delivery.

If you have many items that are small and relatively low value, then a parcel courier is what you need. You have the choice of using the mail service or using a parcel carrier.

Each type of service has its own benefits. For example a parcel carrier will do guaranteed delivery times such as before 9am, before 12pm or just next day. The downside to the parcel carriers can be that their depots are far out of town when it comes to collecting a missed delivery where as the local post office can be local to everyone and allow parcels and packages to be collected with ease.

If you have a high volume of packages a discount may be negotiated and that is the main advantage of using a parcel carrier over the mail service. Both have their pitfalls when it comes to making a claim if a parcel goes missing.

Parcel couriers whether the mail or a private company have limits as to what they can actually carry through their systems. You are not allowed to send food or liquids through either of their systems. Explosives and narcotics, are not allowed through their systems either. To expand a bit more on narcotics, that is prescription drugs that you may want to send.

If the item is unable to be delivered by a parcel company as it is a restricted item, then you need to look at other options. One of these options is a same day courier service but even a same day courier has restrictions too. If for example you need to have large quantities of chemicals that need moving, you would need a delivery service that has hazardous goods certification. Quite often you would need an experienced hazardous goods trained courier for even a small amount of chemicals that need moving as they cannot be delivered through the postal or parcel systems.

Highly dense products may not be able to go through the postal or parcel system either, they may be too heavy to be lifted by one person. Equally a large but light product may not be able to go through the systems as it would be too awkward to lift by just one person.

So when thinking "I need a courier", expand the thought further and explore what type, it can save you many fruitless / pointless phone calls, and time is money after all!

Business Streamlining - Consolidating Software

It is common for companies to pay for a piece of software to work one process, then buy another software to run another, and so on. Before you know it the user's computer is fully loaded with an abundance of programs. If these are standard programs then chances are good everyone in the department must use the same applications. Consolidating software means finding an application with all of your needs integrated into it. A programmer can even develop one specific to the business if you like. When you consolidate applications into one piece of software you only have to install it once.

Business streamlining by consolidating software throughout departments saves on cost. It is expensive to purchase an individual license for every application and for every user. When you consolidate, all you have to buy is one license for each user. Another way you can save money is by not having to train employees for all of the different software packages. When there are many applications for new employees to learn it can take them weeks to get into a normal routine where they are comfortable. One application can be learned in very little time and won't cost as much money for training.

Consolidating software offers business streamlining benefits because when you only have one or two applications it is easier to manage. Information technology departments must keep track of every license for inventory purposes and when each license expires. They must not only inventory the software but it will reduce the amount of calls that users request assistance for. It is much easier to receive trouble tickets on one application than ten different applications.

One way business streamlining can be approached is by consolidating the software that departments use for normal daily activities. One application that provides many uses is much better than installing ten. You can save money on training, purchasing and licenses, and it is much easier to manage. Be sure when you choose the right package it fits all of your computer processing needs. You might even consider hiring a developer to design a software application that works right for your business. This might seem expensive but you will absorb the cost quickly.

The Kyoto Protocol - Success Or Failure Waiting to Happen?

The Kyoto Protocol is still considered as among the greatest achievements in the initiatives to curtail global warming, although it can be a spectacular failure.

Launched in the winter of 1997, the protocol was designed to establish a broad agreement between countries around the world to restrict emissions of harmful greenhouse gases. Due to the too complex membership process and split ratification standards, it took until first quarter of 2005 before it became enforced. It took a long journey to its enforcement in 2005 since negotiations were not only lengthy and complex but were also factious.

Merely signing up to the Kyoto Protocol did not in itself carry any real weight. When a country agreed to ratify Kyoto Protocol's conditions, it is then that it would actually come into force, and merely signing it did not mean anything. Ratification ensured that the country would actively participate in reducing emissions against a specified target. Those who were unable to do so would need to engage in emissions trading, buying credits from participating countries which had been able to reduce their emissions beyond the specification.

According to the Kyoto Protocol sponsor, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, this treaty aimed to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in air at a level that would not interfere with the natural climate system." To this day, 183 parties have ratified the protocol with the latest major standout to sign up being Australia.

Why could the Kyoto Protocol be reviewed as a failure? For the concept to work, it needed to assess the problem as a global one and quite rightly so. There seemed little point in one particular country or a group of countries agreeing to reduce their emissions if another country did not or even increased theirs. The problem as a whole would be the same or worse.

The fact that the United States, by most standards one of the worst contributors to the problem, has refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol has almost doomed it, effectively to failure. We may add on to this the fact that emerging giants India and China put even more pressure on the very principles, as they are not obligated, within the protocol, to reduce greenhouse gas production as "developing countries."

China is about to overtake the United States in volume of emissions and between the two countries will account for the lion's share of dangerous greenhouse gas production and emission around the world. Some would argue that there seems no point in the other countries attempting to trade down their emissions if the largest culprits are not participating and may indeed even be exacerbating the issue.
